This is a very exciting time for Saint Kilian Parish School. Although the history of our parish began back in 1917, the history of our school is currently being written.
In June, 2001, the boundaries of Saint Kilian Parish in Mars, PA, and Saint Ferdinand Parish in Cranberry, PA, were realigned. The result of this was a significant change and dramatic growth for Saint Kilian Parish. On July 2, 2001, Bishop Wuerl appointed Father Charles Bober as Pastor of Saint Kilian with the specific responsibility of preparing the people for this change and initiating the Second Century Campaign to raise funds for a much needed building project.
During the planning sessions for the new building project, it became evident that the influx of parishioners created a need for additional meeting space and CCD classrooms. With one-third of the parishioners being 17 years old and younger, the idea of also using the new space for a Catholic grade school was introduced. A survey to assess interest in a school was completed in the Fall of 2002, resulting in an overwhelming positive response. The plans for the new school were initiated and construction began on the Franklin Road/Route 228 site in April, 2007. Saint Kilian Parish School would be the first brand-new Catholic grade school built in the Diocese of Pittsburgh in almost 40 years.
During the time that finances for the new school were being secured, there was a demand for early education that could be met with Saint Kilian's current facilities. In September, 2006, a preschool for three and four year olds was opened. Success with the program was evident from the very beginning, and immediately the demand for Kindergarten was answered. In August, 2007, Saint Kilian School began both full-day and half-day Kindergarten.
As Saint Kilian's preschool and kindergarten programs were being implemented, the construction of the new school building was taking place. But the physical construction proved to be only a small portion of what was needed to start the new school. The task of developing the curriculum, hiring qualified faculty and staff, and planning and preparing every aspect of student life still needed to be addressed. On October 11, 2007, Sister Kathy Kudlac joined the Saint Kilian Parish Staff as Principal of the new school. Under her direction, programs were developed for the preschool, kindergarten, and grades one through four. In July, 2010, Mrs. Rosanne Kwiatkowski became principal upon Sister Kathy's departure, and plans were put into place to begin development of the middle school.
Saint Kilian Parish School officially opened its doors at the new facility on September 2, 2008 for students in preschool through fourth grade. A new grade will be added each school year until 2012, with Saint Kilian's first eighth grade graduation being held in June, 2013.
