Situated on 33 acres of land, Saint Kilian Parish School is located near the intersection of Route 228 and Franklin Road in Cranberry Township. Our new facility has been designed to meet all of the needs of the student body for generations to come. The 70,000 square foot structure was completed in August 2008.
The main entrance to the facility leads to the school and parish offices. A total of 19 classrooms have been completed this year, along with the library and computer room. Three classrooms will be finished in the summer or 2010 on the lower level, as well as an art and music room. The remaining 5 classrooms on the lower level will be completed during scheduled school breaks and summer vacations as money becomes available. No construction will take place while the children are in the facility. All classrooms are designed to accommodate both school and Faith Formation programs, with separate storage areas for both. The entire state of the art facility, from offices to individual classrooms, is wired to provide the most up to date technology. The school provides video-conferencing in a central location, in addition to educational television, internet service and smart boards in each 1st - 6th grade homerooms and two portable smart board units for the lower floor.
The second wing of the new building houses the cafeteria, full service kitchen, and the gymnasium. The cafeteria is used during the weekdays for the students, then as parish meeting space during evenings and weekends. The kitchen is used to prepare hot lunches for the students, and provides space as a concession stand for activities in the gymnasium.
The gymnasium is a regulation size gym that can accommodate both official basketball and volleyball games. The gymnasium has been configured and equipped to have two smaller basketball courts running cross-width. This enables several activities to take place simultaneously if necessary. Accordion-style bleachers flank the gym walls for flexible seating options. In addition to physical education classes and sports activities, the gymnasium is transformed during the weekends to provide worship space for up to 900 people until the new church building is completed in 2017. A multipurpose portable stage has been purchased for the building which will allow flexibility in placement and configuration for various school and parish events.
Every area of our new facility promises to provide opportunities to enhance educational and spiritual growth. Even the grounds surrounding the facility will offer a unique learning experience. Here on our 33 acres, teachers may move the students outside to observe different aspects of nature, thus creating what is known as a "green classroom." This type of hands-on learning will provide Saint Kilian students with a very unique perspective and appreciation for our environment.
The grounds of Saint Kilian Parish School are used for recess and recreational play. Several areas have been designated for outdoor use. A soccer/football field is available for use by all students, both for recess and organized sports.
Safety of the children was kept in mind during every aspect of the design phase of our new facility, both inside and out. The classroom wing is highly secured and can only be entered using a key or access card. Visitors and volunteers are required to sign in at the office and are not be able to access the student areas without assistance from school personnel. All of the outdoor areas will be fenced in and will be easily reached without crossing any streets.
The design of the facility and construction of the building have been a labor of love for many individuals. Recently completed, our new facility now meets the many needs of our parishioners and has begun a new chapter in the history of Saint Kilian Parish.
