In celebration of the Arts and the National Education Association's
12th Annual Read Across America Week,
SKPS has a variety of planned activities to last all month long.

*Students are asked to please bring in one book for the book swap during their library time next week*

2010 Read Around the Planet: English and World Languages

Grades K-5 will video conference with a similar grade throughout the country to celebrate reading.

   

Monday, March 1 - Read Across America Week Kick-Off!
Father Bober kicks off our Read Across America event after mass  by sharing his favorite book with the children.  The children's lockers will display their favorite titles and the hallway becomes a "Celtic book walk" for all to enjoy. Don't forget to bring in your $1 for the KDKA Turkey Fund if you plan to wear your pajamas to school on Wednesday!

Tuesday, March 2 - Today's Forecast: a Lot of Fun & Reading!
March 2 is Dr. Seuss' Birthday and students will celebrate with birthday cake in the cafeteria! The Cat in the Hat will roam the halls and mystery readers will sneak down to the library to share stories with the children and our book swap begins! Finally, Weatherman Dennis Bowman and the KDKA-TV crew will visit SKPS and share with the children how one book changed his life. Watch for SKPS on KDKA tonight at 6:00 and tomorrow at 5:45am, 6:45am, 7:45am and noon.

Wednesday, March 3 - Read in Your PJ's Day, Book Swap and Mystery Readers!
All students are welcome to come to school in their PJ's and bring a minimum donation of $1 to be given to Dennis Bowman, the meteorologist from KDKA, for the KD Turkey Fund which provides turkeys to low income families for Thanksgiving. Your $1 is due on Monday, March 1!

We will continue the book swap in the library and listen to stories read in different languages. More mystery readers will share their favorite stories. The Cat in the Hat will deliver 106 new books from the Library Wishlist in honor of his 106th birthday.

Thursday, March 4 - Writing Workshops!
Andrea Perry, author of here's What to Do When You Can't Find Your Shoe and The Snack Smasher, will spend all day providing writing workshops for Grades 1-5.

Friday, March 5 - Oh, the Places You Go Dress Down Day!
Oh, the Places You Go is 20 years old and we celebrate by wearing jeans and a t-shirt from one of your favorite destinations. The Cat in the Hat will be on hand to read with our Kindergarteners and to deliver achievement certificates and books for each classroom.

Wednesday, March 10 - John Manders Day!
Children's Book Illustrator and Author, John Manders visits Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms.  Order your books by February 19 so you can have Mr. Manders personalize a book for your child. 

Tuesday, March 23 - Meet the Author Virtual Field Trip!
Grades 2 - 5 meet author Susan Thoms and discuss Cesar Takes A Break.

Monday, March 29 - Lessons from Broadway and Beyond!
Incredibly talented actor and storyteller, Tim Hartman hosts a writing workshop for Grades 2 - 5.

Tuesday, April 20 - Meet the Author Virtual Field Trip!
Grades 4 - 5 meet author Elizabeth Raum and discussThe Revolutionary War.

Tuesday, May 4 - Meet the Author Virtual Field Trip!
First Grade discuss Belinda Begins Ballet.
