Welcome to SKPSAA
Saint Kilian Parish School Athletic Association is proud to offer Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, and Soccer to enrolled and registered students beginning in 3rd grade. Volleyball will be offered for the girls 5th and 6th grade. All teams will play a planned set of games/meets within the diocese and adhere to all rules of the sport and the diocese. Developmental teams are in the 3rd and 4th grades while Junior Varsity consists of 5th and 6th grade (Varsity will consist of 7th and 8th grade as we grow in 2011/2012). The Junior Varsity teams adhere to tighter rules for diocesan play and will maintain a win/loss record for advancing into the finals.
In order to have a successful program, we ask that all parents/guardians speak with your children and determine the sport(s) the students wish to play during the season the sport is being offered. It is critical that both parties in your household want to participate in the sports program to make it successful for your child, your family and for our school. Our coaches have experience in the sport and will do their best to provide your child(ren) with a strong foundation of skills for the sport being played.
We believe that this foundation is the key to the success and future of our sports program. Foundation skills components include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Coaches, parents and children behaving in a Christlike manner at all times
- Children participation in practice sessions and games
- Children paying attention to the coaches and not horsing around (talking, fighting, arguing) as the coaches, and the association, are not to be considered babysitters but mentors
- Working on skills and development of the players
- Working together as team and developing together as a team
- Beginning to learn and refine the competitive spirit
- Providing leadership skills to the players
- Living and playing the Celtic Way, embracing "Honesty, Responsibility, Self Discipline, Compassion, Respect"
- Making the sport enjoyable and fun for all participating parties!
3rd Grade Team Principles
Our goal is to maintain a developmental program for the 3rd grade teams, preparing them for future programs. These teams may or may not have the ability to participate in games; however, based on past experience, our children enjoy playing against other teams regularly. We will review and look into hosting/travelling to various schools during the season. All sports revolve around students registering for the sport and coaches availability.
4th Grade Team Principles
The 4th grade program will still be developmental in nature but will have numerous additional offerings:
- Furthering the development of skills and refining playing strategies for offensive and defensive play
- Focusing on the good of the team and creating a team environment
- Focusing on sportsmanship
- Increasing the level of competitiveness
- Maintaining a positive attitude at all times
5th and 6th Grade Team Principles
Once your child enters the 5th grade, this is the formation of our Junior Varsity sports offering. While the program still works on developing our children, it also enters them into more competitive sports. At this age, we engage into competitive diocesan games - scores are kept, rankings are created, and shared throughout western Pennsylvania .. We aim to host a competitive team for all of our sports as long as enough students are available and interested in participatation. In the event we have an abundance of students seeking to play a sport, we may review the possibility of hosting a second team for that particular sport and entering that squad into the diocesan schedule.
