Chicken Pox Slight fever, skin rash, pimples, blisters and scabs may be present Exclude from school until vesicles are dry.  Disinfect anything that was in contact.
     
Conjunctivitis/ Pink Eye Eyes are red, watery, itchy and sensitive to light.  Eyelids swollen. Treatment must be sought and can return to school 24 hours after treatment.
     
Fifth Disease Striking erythema(reddness) of the cheeks, followed by 1-4 days by a lace-like rash on trunk and extremities which fades but may reappear. Communicable before onset of rash.  Is NOT contagious once rash occurs.  Routine handwashing and proper disposal of tissues used with infected respiratory secretions recommended to reduce spread. Expectant mothers should not come in contact with infected persons.
     
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Generally mild fever, mouth ulcers and rash.  Ofter blisters located on palms, soles and bottocks.  Fever begins first, then 1-2 days later mouth ulcers and rash appear. Spread through contact with bodily secretions.  Good personal hygiene recommended.  Disinfect any surfaces affected.  Exclude from school if ill.
     
Impetigo Blister-like lesions which later develop into pustules or irregular shape. Communicable thorough direct contact with draining sores or bandages.  Good personal hygiene, especially handwashing suggested.  Exclude for school until sores are no longer draining and judged noninfectious by a physician.  Sores should be bandaged.
     
Lice Irritation and itching of scalp or body.  Presence of small light grey insects and nits which are attached to the base of the hairs. Direct contact withan infected person and indirect contact withtheir personal belongings, especially their clothing and headgear.  Exclude from school until adequately treated by physician.
     
Mono
(Mononucleosis)
Fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands. Direct contact with saliva of infected person.  Use good hygiene.  May return to school when well enough to resume normal activities.
     
Pneumonia Pneumonia is an infection in one of both lungs caused by germs and other viruses. May return to school once taking antibiotics for 24 hours, no fever and/or extreme symptoms.
     
Strep Throat Painful throat, fever, swollen glands, headache, stomach ache, fatigue. Strep must be treated with antibiotics and child may return to school after 24 hours of taking antibiotics.
